Living in or visiting Greater Hartford puts you within a short drive of dozens of fairs and festivals across central Connecticut. From classic agricultural fairs to apple-harvest celebrations and free city events, here’s how to plan your season around the capital region.
Central Connecticut Agricultural Fairs
The capital region’s flagship country fair is the Berlin Fair (September 17–20, 2026), a large Lions-run fair just south of the city. East of the river, the Hebron Harvest Fair (September 10–13) draws big crowds for its midway and demolition derby, while the Four Town Fair in Somers and the Wapping Fair in South Windsor offer accessible, family-friendly fair days to the north.
Apple Harvest & Fall Festivals
Autumn near Hartford means apple harvest festivals. The Southington Apple Harvest Festival (early-to-mid October) spans two weekends on the town green with apple fritters, a carnival, a parade, and fireworks. The Glastonbury Apple Harvest & Music Festival celebrates the town’s orchard heritage along the Connecticut River.
For a unique local tradition, the Bristol Mum Festival honors the city’s chrysanthemum-growing history with a large fall parade and family activities.
Free City Festivals
Hartford itself hosts free festivals worth the trip. The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz fills Bushnell Park with three free days of live music each July, and the Hartford Greek Festival offers free admission to food, dancing, and music. Just west, Celebrate! West Hartford brings a juried arts-and-crafts festival to the town common.
Nearby New Britain’s Little Poland Festival (June 14) is a vibrant, free taste of Eastern Europe a short drive from downtown.
Grange & Farm Fairs
For a quieter outing, the Farmington Valley’s grange fairs — the Granby Grange Fair and the Simsbury Grange Fair in West Simsbury — and the youth-focused Tolland County 4-H Fair in Vernon are all within easy reach and free to attend. They’re a great way to experience Connecticut’s agricultural roots close to the city.
